Splendors of Luoyang Museum:  Stone Bi Xie of Eastern Han Dynasty

Splendors of Luoyang Museum takes you to touch the pulse of Chinese civilization and feel the history and culture of this millennium ancient capital.

During the Eastern Han Dynasty, official Que(a freestanding, ceremonial gate tower in traditional Chinese architecture) and mausoleum set up powerful animals with guardian significance, and stone Bi Xie was often placed on both passages of the Sacred Way . This stone Bi Xie unearthed in 1992 in Youfang, Luoyang, is one of the treasures of Luoyang Museum. It is carved from a whole piece of bluestone, about 3 meters long, 2 meters high, and nearly 8 tons in weight. Its head resembles a lion, while its body looks like a tiger or a leopard. It has glaring eyes, and its open mouth exposed sharp teeth. Besides, two wings grew on its shoulders. The hollow limbs and arc long tail stand firmly on the ground, while the body presents the curved 'S' shape, which seems to rise from the ground and fly to the sky, showing the wild romantic style of the carving art of the Eastern Han Dynasty. From a morphological point of view, stone Bi Xie was used lions as its prototype, but lions were not native animals in the Central Plains, so some scholars believe that Bi Xie may be influenced by western art themes. It was the integration of foreign art and Chinese local culture.Besides, it was also reveals the smooth flow of the Silk Road in the Han Dynasty, and the close connection between the Central Plains and the civilization of the Western regions.
