咸豐年間正值太平天國(guó)革命運(yùn)動(dòng)的高潮時(shí)期。此時(shí)民怨沸騰,，清政府財(cái)政拮據(jù),，國(guó)庫(kù)虧空．在錢幣鑄造上大做文章，將財(cái)政危機(jī)轉(zhuǎn)嫁到老百姓身上,。相繼鑄造“咸豐通寶”,、“咸豐重寶”、“咸豐元寶”等種類繁多的錢幣．咸豐元年首鑄“咸豐通寶”制錢,。由于太平天國(guó)革命運(yùn)動(dòng)的發(fā)生,，和鴉片戰(zhàn)爭(zhēng)的爆發(fā)．錢局鑄造制錢已很難正常進(jìn)行，很多省的錢局實(shí)際上處于停鑄狀態(tài),，即使開(kāi)鑄,，也是偷工減料 。因而造成咸豐通寶制錢精品少 ,，而粗制濫造的多,，大都質(zhì)劣而輕小，或以鐵錢,、鉛錢代替銅錢。咸豐元年時(shí),，規(guī)定錢重一錢二分,，到咸豐二年，變?yōu)橐诲X,，但各鑄行所鑄造的制錢大多輕于規(guī)定重量,。“咸豐通寶”面文大多書寫楷書，背文滿文局名有：寶源,、寶泉,、寶河、寶德,、寶東,、寶伊、寶濟(jì),、寶晉,、寶陜、寶鞏,、寶蘇,、寶浙、寶昌,、寶福,、寶臺(tái)、寶武,、寶南,、寶廣、寶桂,、寶川,、寶云 阿克蘇、寶黔等二十四個(gè)錢局,。其中寶臺(tái),、寶德、寶廣,、阿克蘇等局?jǐn)?shù)量極少,。
