dear listeners, I am Prof. Zheng Xinmin from Shanghai International
Studies
University. In today's programme, we are going to talk about the
importance of blackboard or whiteboard writing. Obviously, blackboard is an important visual aid and direct modeling used by English teachers for effective teaching. An English teacher makes extensive use of blackboard in his or her daily classroom teaching for organzing ideas, providing examples, illustrate arguments, drawing tables, constructing plots and so on. Good blackboard writing leads to the following:
Nevertheless, blackboard writing is only a teaching aid. It can't substitute
for a logical presentation of the material. Break your presentation into manageable parts and give your students a chance to deal with facts and concepts as
you present each part, or just afterward. Then verbally outline the next part
of your presentation. If you don't do this, your students may be copying blindly, without any idea of where you are going. Therefore, you must remember that it is very bad for you to talk to the blackboard. The right way for you to do is to maintain eye contact with your students: write, then talk, or talk and then write! To be more exact, it is good for you to make a point, stop writing, let students catch up, then discuss. Another thing for you to remember is that you need to write big words neatly. Don't scrawl! Try to keep your work visible for as long as possible and never erase your work only when you have run out of space to write. Use colored chalk only for emphasis. Be certain that the colors used are visible from the back of the classroom. Do not use too many different colors at a time. Well, that concludes today's programme. Thank you for being with us. Bye for now. |
