The Often Overlooked Baoqing Road
Baoqing Road is remarkably short, so much so that it is frequentlyarded; yet, it once served as a major thoroughfare connecting the North Railway Station to Xujiahui. It begins at the intersection of Changshu Road and Huaihai Middle Road, extending southward toward Xujiahui, with the next junction leading directly into Hengshan Road. Consequently, many assume that this brief stretch is merely an extension of Hengshan Road, when in fact, the segment from Huaihai Middle Road to Taojiang Road (formerly known as Jingjiang Road) is designated as Baoqing Road.

Despite its brevity, Baoqing Road is steeped in the nostalgia of old Shanghai. While some long-time residents may struggle to recall the names of contemporary skyscrapers, they remain vividly aware of the original landmark buildings, such as the Xuhui Branch at No. 1 Baoqing Road (formerly the Fuxi Police Station) and the gas station at No. 2.
The transformation of Baoqing Road over the years has been significant, yet new focal points have emerged to capture public interest. Notably, No. 3 Baoqing Road has become the center of a lengthy narrative intertwined with various cultural contexts and the intricacies of Shanghai's real estate sector, including information that some authorities have deliberately chosen to obscure. Thankfully, the decision to transform this site into a museum offers a comforting resolution for the historic structure.

Some may wonder how I managed to capture this solitary photograph of Baoqing Road devoid of any pedestrians. The answer lies in the collective memory of the time when mask-wearing became ubiquitous; during February 2020, I rode my bicycle from my home, first making my way to Xujiahui before retracing my route along Zhaojiabang Road, ultimately heading eastward to the Bund.
Lane 9 Baoqing, adjacent to No. 3 Baoqing Road, is a charming alley flanked by a long row of garden villas on its southern side. The breach in the wall on the side of Fuxing Zhong Road allows a glimpse of these historic Shanghai residences, inviting those with a keen eye to stroll through the alley and explore further.
In recent times, discussions of personal glorification have diminished, leading to fewer mentions of the Electric Tools Research Institute at No. 10 Baoqing Road. This was, in fact, the workplace of the former engineer before his political career took off. Interested individuals might find it worthwhile to pay homage to this site.

Noteworthy changes have occurred along Baoqing Road, particularly at the intersection with Taojiang Road, where the headquarters of Guangming Group has relocated. This transition involved converting their original headquarters on Huashan Road into the Shanghai Old Brand Museum, subsequently moving their office operations here. The surrounding collection of old villas has also undergone significant renovation and enhancement.

Although Baoqing Road is brief, its importance within the context of city walks is undeniable. Whether approaching from Huaihai Middle Road or Fuxing Zhong Road, we shall certainly highlight this path as a focal point in our narrative.
