上班族久坐是個大問題,,我們都知道久坐對腰椎頸椎傷害很大,,那要怎么應對呢?今天這位美國人也有腰間盤突出的問題,,我們一起來聽她聊聊她是怎么做的吧,!

I actually have damage in my spine. We call it a slipped disc (椎間盤突出) or a bulging (鼓起的) disc. So I have to be very careful or else I will be in excruciating pain. And I can only lay down.

Gwen

That's quite the same as I used to have. I used to have that. And I used to have problems with my neck, but I'm getting better. I've been swimming, actually. I've been doing some exercise, you know, some weights at the gym and I turn better. But still, you have to pay more attention to the neck and the spine.

Yes. The number one thing for me is not sitting for extended periods of time. So I totally get the airplane thing. If I’m on a longer flight, I have to get up and I have to walk around. And sometimes when I felt too embarrassed, I’ll just go to the bathroom and stretch in the bathroom rather than in the middle of the plane.

Gwen

Stretching is really helpful?

Yes. Particular stretches, because…where my injury is, if I put a certain pressure on it, it will cause excruciating pain. But if I do the right sort of stretches, it releases the muscles that are near there and kind of relax of everything. And it took a bit of talking to my doctor and doing some research to find out what I can do and what I should not do. And the doctor I was going to was a chiropractor (手療法醫(yī)師). Have you heard of them?

Gwen

No?

Their goal is to adjust…it's basically like adjusting your spine, adjusting the arrangement of your bones by moving your body. And mostly it's just like, in a way, it’s where the muscles are holding the bones and get the muscles to relax, and the bones go back to where they're supposed to go, like they adjust your body to adjust the position. That's the word I'm looking for. The position of the bones. And then it's up to you to do the work for your body so that your muscles then hold the bones in the correct base.

Gwen

So you're stretching and with the doctor's moving positions, you combine these two, and in the end, it helps with your spine position.

Oh, yeah. Because if I only go to the doctor, then every time I have to go back. But if I’m doing the stretches, I can go months, and months, and months without needing to see the doctor.

Gwen

So about the stretching... do you follow some apps or do you just learn them from the doctor?

It’s kind of a combination of learning from the doctor, doing my own research to know which ones to really avoid. And then knowing that when I do certain yoga positions is helpful or it causes pain. And then that tells me to do more of the ones that are helpful and not do the ones that cause pain. So a little bit of trial and error and a little bit of instruction. Every morning, it’s more like ten to fifteen minutes of what my doctor has told me to do, or yoga…sequence that does the same thing as what my doctor told me to do. Now I can also tell you, I don't have an issue particularly with my neck, but sometimes it would be tight and sore from being on the computer too much. And doing yoga, I stopped having that pain in my neck.

Gwen

Yeah, I also have this neck and spine problem as I said, and I think over ten people overall have advised me to do this yoga thing. Well, I've never tried it. You know, I’m more of a weights person (喜歡舉鐵的人) instead of this yoga... Yeah, I should try this.

Yeah, I really recommend, if you've never done it before to go to a class, so the teacher can look at you and a lot of times the teacher will come and tell you moved here moved there so that you're actually doing the right movement.

Gwen

I know that at the gym there are yoga courses, but it's a little bit time-consuming (費時的). Every time the course would last for over an hour. Well, if I had that time at the gym, I would rather do the treadmill, and that would consume some more calories.

Some yoga you do, and the next day all your muscles still sore. You were sweating when you laughed. It depends on the type of yoga. All in all,  I do recommend, even if you're not going every week to the same class, at least go once to a class to have that instructor that's watching you as you're moving and then you can do whatever you want because then you have learned what's the right way to stand in this position.

Gwen

So apart from this yoga, do you do other types of exercise like treadmill or…

No, not really. But one of the reasons I wanted to move and be somewhere in Europe, and to be in a city, is because I can walk everywhere. I know other people that take the metro but for me, if it's less than twenty minutes I will just walk, and I get a lot of exercise from just using my two feet to go to the grocery store to go wherever. Because when I was in the United States, oh my goodness, you can't go anywhere on your feet. I mean, you walk five seconds to your car, drive 30 minutes, and then walk a minute into the store.

Gwen

It's too far away, right? Every two directions.

Yeah, everywhere is too far away, and very few places have sidewalks even. It’s just not meant for people to walk now.

Gwen

That's what I've heard. America is a country on the wheels.

That's a good way of putting it.
