10款萬圣節(jié)糖果大PK,,你中意哪款?

Hi guys! With Halloween just around the corner, I thought it would be kind of interesting to have a look at the candies that people hand out during Trick-or-treating. I personally have never tried some of these candies, but my wife grew up eating most of these varieties, so she's got some strong opinions about them. If you've tried some of these candies before, or have some Halloween stories of your own, please share with us!

around the corner: going to happen very soon
With Chinese New Year just around the corner, major celebrations were being planned.

Best Halloween candy:
1. Starburst

These little fruity candies really are bursting with flavor. I used to trade all my lemon ones for strawberry ones with my brother!

2. Twix

This classic chocolate caramel cookie candy will never disappoint. Too bad most stores in Shanghai don't carry Twix, so I always stock up when we visit Hong Kong!

3. Pop Rocks

Pop Rocks were seriously the best. I'd be willing to trade several pieces of Hershey's chocolate for a bag of Pop Rocks. The crackling and popping of sugar on my tongue - what's not to love?

4. Pixy Stix

My mom HATED these because I would make such a mess eating them. They were basically flavored sugar packed into little sticks that would give me the biggest sugar rush.

5. Nerds

Getting a pack of Nerds during Trick-or-treating was like hitting the jackpot. These little crunchy sour candies were so much fun to eat. One box usually  came with two flavors, so you could eat them individually or together.

stock up (on sth): to buy a large amount of sth so that you will have enough for future us
When there's a storm coming we always stock up on food and candles.

what's not to love/like: used to say that you think sth is very good, and that nobody could disagree with your opinion
It's a big house with a swimming pool. What's not to like?

sugar rush/sugar high: popular and scientifically controversial belief that consumption of sugar-containing food or beverages can lead to temporary hyperactivity
Some kids seem to get sugar rushes after drinking too much soda and juice.

hit the jackpot: to become highly and unexpectedly successful
I really hit the jackpot with my Halloween costume this year. Everyone at the party loved it!

Worst Halloween Candy:

1. Raisins

Come on. It's Halloween! I wan't candy, not fruit, let alone dried fruit. If I got raisins for Halloween, I'd always eat them with M&Ms. Now that I'm older, I enjoy raisins on their own, but they still can't beat having real candy on Halloween!

2. Pencils

One year, a neighbor dressed up as a 'Good Fairy' and gave out pencils and pens in place of candy. She told us that candy was bad for our teeth and that we should study hard instead of eat candy all day. Man, that was like the worst buzzkill ever!

3. Candy Corn

These little candies were such a Halloween classic, but they tasted like wax. My brother and I would just throw out all of our Candy Corn because it was just too disgusting to stomach.

4. Black Jelly Beans

I'd always find at least one black one lurking around in a pack of jelly beans. I'm usually very careful and pick out the licorice flavored black ones, but sometimes I'd eat one by accident, and it would just ruin my entire day.

5. Bubble gum

Normally, bubble gum actually isn't all that bad. But there's just something special about Halloween that makes me crave sugary treats that I can actually swallow and fill my belly up with. Sorry, but bubble gum on Halloween just isn't gonna cut it!

let alone: not to mention - used especially to emphasize the improbability of a contrasting example
I don't even have a penny, let alone a dollar!

buzzkill: sb or sth that spoils or ruins an otherwise enjoyable event
It's such a buzzkill when my boss calls me on my days off.

stomach (v): to endure or tolerate
I can't stomach your constant nagging.

not cut it: to not be able to deal with problems or difficulties satisfactorily
This flimsy umbrella just isn't gonna cut it in this storm!
