On Happiness (the composition in the final test in the 3rd term of 2014) 1. Happiness or gladness is an emotional or affective state that is characterized by feelings of enjoyment and satisfaction. As a state and a subject, it has been pursued and commented on extensively throughout world history. This reflects the universal importance that humans place on happiness. As for this topic, different ideas have been given/discussed as follows. Some people assert (主張,;聲稱) that the improvement of material life can make people more happy. Over the last decades, many people in the world have enjoyed unparalleled economic growth that many people’s income have increased tremendously. We have better houses and buildings, cars, holidays, jobs, education and many products of advanced science and technology. According to standard economic theory, this should have made people much happier. But surveys show otherwise. Why? Because once material discomfort has been banished, extra income becomes much less important. Indeed, money is perceived as one of the key factors affecting a person’s happiness. As a matter of fact, money is one of the sources of happiness. With money, one can buy whatever he likes. With money, one can do whatever he enjoys. As the old saying goes: “Money can’t buy everything, but without money, you can do nothing.” Nevertheless, money is incredibly(固然) important, for people need it to survive. But it is not the only thing people need, and money itself will not bring lasting happiness to most people. Man does not live by bread alone. In addition to material life, people need spiritual life more, such as love, friendship, health, knowledge and belief, etc. Thus, improving our relationships with each other, with family, with friends and in the community becomes more significant and important than trying to increase our income. If we want a happier life, we should focus most on the experiences which we value for our intrinsic worth. Experiences may include both happy and sad ones. Happy experiences are not only beautiful memories but also a great drive推進力 and encouragement for us to move on and achieve the greater success. Whereas, sad but meaningful experiences can enable us to draw lessons and learn from mistakes. Therefore, we should try to share more experiences with our families, friends, classmates, coworkers, and even strangers, which can definitely enrich our spiritual life, too. In conclusion, happiness lies more in rich spiritual life than in material life. |
